Introduction to the properties of nickel-based alloy 718 (Inconel 718)

Introduction to the properties of nickel-based alloy 718 (Inconel 718)

Main features of nickel-based alloy 718:

Inconel 718 is extremely resistant to chlorine and sulfur-based stress corrosion cracking

Resistant to high temperatures and water-based corrosion

Inconel 718 Industrial Terminology: UNS N07718, Nicrofer 5219, Alvac 718, Haynes 718, Altemp 718, Nickel 718, IN718, AFNOR NC 19 Fe Nb, AWS 013

Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardened nickel-based superalloy with excellent high-temperature corrosion resistance. Commonly used in the aerospace manufacturing industry, Inconel 718 offers excellent mechanical strength as well as ductility at elevated temperatures up to 704oC/1300oF. It is non-magnetic in nature.

Nickel-based superalloy 718 has good resistance to oxidation and other types of corrosion in space jet engines and land-based gas turbine applications. It is an ideal material for applications requiring excellent resistance to creep and stress corrosion cracking (up to 982oC or 1800oF). Alloy 718 provides complete protection against pitting and crevice corrosion in sulfide, chloride, carbon dioxide and other harsh environments.

Inconel 718 alloy is commonly used in the form of Inconel 718 wire, Inconel 718 rod, and Inconel 718 plate.

Inconel 718 Application:

Inconel 718 handles:

Inconel 718 has good impact properties even at extremely low temperatures up to -423oF or -253oC. It welds easily without toughening or cracking. It can be easily worked and age hardened. Alloy 718 is welded in the solution annealed condition, but can be aged and cold worked or cold worked and aged.

Inconel 718 ages and hardens during heat treatment. Has an austenitic grain structure over a wide temperature range. Different solution and aging treatments are used when heat treating this alloy to enhance its short-term or long-term high-temperature mechanical properties.

Inconel 718 processing:

Forming and machining of Inconel 718 complicates conventional methods due to its rapid work hardening. After initial machining, work hardening can deform the material or tool during subsequent machining. Therefore, Alloy 718 is machined with a hostile and lightly cutting hard tool, thus reducing the number of passes required. It finally provides a way to process materials in a solution form that requires only the final steps to be followed after age hardening. Board cutting is usually performed by using a waterjet. The selective laser melting process is another common method for producing 718 alloy parts.
